Adult Counselling

While RMPS has a strong and long-standing reputation for working with children and families, our background and expertise help us be an excellent support for adults too. Sometimes parents and family members also need support. We’re here for you too!

As children grow into adults, sometimes they need the adult version of support like treatment for anxiety, ADHD, trauma, depression or Autism. Maybe you got support for these things when you were younger, maybe you didn’t. We can help and have specialized knowledge of what these issues may have meant for you as a child, and now as an adult too. We also support those who are entering adulthood. This can be the usual transition from being a youth to an adult with leaving high school and moving into the next phase of life or it could be supporting youth who have had specialized supports throughout childhood to ensure that they continue to have support in adulthood. Our background in understanding development, brain development and regulation can give us added perspective for understanding the issues you’re facing now and how to help.

Specialized Skills That Include Classic Talk Therapy and Beyond

Maybe you’ve been involved with RMPS as a parent and feel comfortable with our staff and clinic. Or maybe you want a clinician who understands your situation with kids and family. Or maybe you have had challenges with attention or social interactions or emotional regulation since childhood. Or, maybe you have tried traditional talk therapy and it didn’t provide the breakthrough you were looking for. Our team of psychologists has expanded skills beyond regular talk therapy that not all psychologists or therapists have.  If words don’t come easily, or if you feel “stuck,” or traditional talk therapy approaches haven’t been as effective as you’d like, our psychologists may have other ideas for approaches that could help you to make the progress you are seeking. Sometimes taking a different approach, like art or sand or music or movement, even for a session or two, can help to shift perspective, gain new insight, or bring clarity that didn’t exist in a purely talk therapy approach. We understand that many adults seek therapy not just for self-reflection, but also for tangible improvements, whether that means reducing anxiety, finding strategies and approaches that work for managing focus and concentration, improving communication, building healthier relationships, managing stress, or regaining a sense of purpose. Our psychologists work with you to set clear goals and create a customized plan that respects your individuality and pace.

For some, counselling means finally addressing long-standing emotional wounds; for others, it’s about finding better coping tools for the demands of everyday life. No matter your starting point, we will walk with you to create a plan that works for you and we’ll regularly check in with you about your progress. We want this to work for you and will do our part to make that happen.

If you’re searching for support that is broader than the norm, we are here to support you with in-person appointments in Calgary or online across Alberta. We’re here to help you gain clarity and build the life you want.

Adult Assessment

Adults often struggle with issues that impact their daily functioning at home, work, or school. These issues may have been around since childhood or perhaps have come up more recently. With an assessment, the goal is to get to the bottom of what is happening so that a proper treatment plan can be developed. Typical adult assessments include: attention (ADHD), anxiety, depression,  learning disabilities, cognitive challenges, and Autism.

At RMPS, our psychologists don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to assessment. Every person who walks through our doors has their own story, so we take the time to really understand your history, your concerns, and what you want out of the process. An assessment isn’t just about spotting the hard parts; it’s also about noticing the strengths you already have, and the things that you can lean on in everyday life.

What does that look like? It will involve gathering background information about you, might involve you completing standardized measures such as cognitive or academic testing, could involve interviews, and it may also include questionnaires or interviews completed with others who know you well. These tools give us a clearer picture of what’s getting in the way and how it shows up across different areas of life. Once the results are in, we walk you through every step and guide you on how to use these findings for your betterment.

For many adults, an assessment can be a turning point, especially if you’ve spent years wondering whether ADHD, anxiety, or a learning difficulty has been quietly shaping your day-to-day. With that insight, we can recommend a path forward. Sometimes that’s counselling, sometimes neurotherapy, sometimes another evidence-based option that fits your needs.

If you’ve been looking for an adult assessment, we can see you in person at our office in Calgary. For some individuals, we may also be able to conduct some or all of an assessment online.  Our team will provide you with the knowledge, strategies, and confidence to move forward with a new understanding of yourself, as well as a path to support and strategies for your next steps.

Neurofeedback

Sometimes, talk therapy alone isn’t enough, especially when the brain itself is struggling to regulate focus, mood, or stress. That’s where Neurofeedback comes in. It’s a gentle, non-invasive approach that helps train your brain to function more efficiently.

At RMPS, our psychologists use neurofeedback to help both children and adults with concerns such as attention difficulties (including ADHD), anxiety, mood regulation, and sleep issues. The process begins with a brain map (EEG) to identify patterns of over- or under-activity. From there, individualized training sessions are designed to encourage more balanced brainwave activity.

During a session, sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brain activity in real time. You’ll watch a movie, listen to music, or play a simple game, all of which respond to how your brain is functioning in that moment. When your brain produces healthier patterns, you receive instant positive feedback, which helps reinforce better regulation over time.

Many clients describe neurofeedback as calming and empowering. It’s not about changing who you are, it’s about helping your brain find its natural rhythm so you can think more clearly, feel more centered, and respond to life with greater ease.

Whether used on its own or alongside therapy, neurofeedback can be a powerful tool for long-term growth, offering lasting improvements in focus, mood, and overall well-being.

Parent Counseling And Consultation

Parents and guardians know their children well, but may feel ill-equipped to figure out the best way to approach an issue or challenge in parenting their child. Parent Consultation can help a parent or guardian determine the strategy or approach or plan that will be the best fit for the child and the family.

At RMPS, we know parenting can be amazing, but exhausting too. Even the most loving, attentive parents sometimes wonder, “Am I handling this the right way?” Whether it’s big feelings, tricky behavior, or social struggles, it’s not always clear what to do next. Parent counseling gives you a safe space to talk things through, share worries, and learn practical strategies that actually fit your family.

When you meet with one of our psychologists, the focus isn’t on giving generic advice. We take time to really listen and understand you, your child and your situation. Maybe it’s tantrums, school stress, sibling battles, or just the ups and downs that come with growing up. Whatever the challenge, we’ll work together to find approaches that respect your child’s personality, strengths, and needs.

adult parent counselling

Parent counseling also makes a big difference when your child is in therapy. By learning tools you can use at home, you help reinforce what your child is practicing in sessions. This creates consistency, helps progress stick, and often makes day-to-day life feel less overwhelming. Many parents find they not only support their child better, but also feel more confident and steady in themselves.

At the heart of it, parent consultation is about empowerment. With the right guidance, families can communicate more openly, cut down on stress, and create a more supportive environment at home. At RMPS, we’ll walk alongside you, offering both expert insights and compassionate support as you navigate the challenges and joys of raising your child.

ADHD Assessment Alberta – FAQs

What issues can adult counselling help with?

Counselling can support adults with stress management, parenting support, inter-personal struggles, ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, and personal growth.

The answer to this question varied depending on what you are seeking the assessment for. An anxiety assessment will look different than an ADHD or an Autism Assessment. What you can expect at RMPS is a clear and written assessment plan after we have met with you to find out more about what you are looking for. You’re part of the process every step of the way so that there aren’t any surprises in the assessment process, and it will be tailored to your needs. Assessments may evaluate attention, memory, learning difficulties, cognitive functioning, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum concerns, or other mental health issues.

If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of what you need, we’re here to help you figure out where to start and what service will best suit your needs.

Our psychologists are unique in that we have strong backgrounds in development, in understanding the role of regulation (attention, behaviour, emotions) in daily functioning, and in understanding trauma and its impact even if it happened a long time ago. We are also unique in that we may be able to help you when traditional talk therapy approaches have hit a wall because we have skills and approaches that don’t rely only on talking and conscious processing.

Searching for “adult psychologist near me” will bring options, but at RMPS you’ll find both expertise and personalized care under one roof.
